The 89th Academy Awards is right around the corner – Its an exciting time for both the fans and actors/actresses alike…though, things aren’t so peachy.
You’d think that for most actors and actresses, winning an Academy Award would be among one of the greatest things that could happen in their acting career. But that isn’t the case. For others, winning the 24-karat gold-plated statue (which is worth around $900) is “the stupidest thing in the world,” “total utter bullsh*t,” and “rigged.” Below is a list of actors who (basically) hate the Oscars!
1. Joaquin Phoenix
The 42-year-old actor is best known for Ridley Scott’s Gladiator, among others like Inherent Vice, Walk the Line, and We Own the Night. Back when Mr. Phoenix was nominated for The Master, he told interviewers that the Oscars were:
“Total, utter bullsh*t. I don’t believe in it. It’s a carrot, but it’s the worst-tasting carrot I’ve ever tasted in my whole life. I don’t want this carrot. It’s totally subjective. Pitting people against each other…It’s the stupidest thing in the whole world.”
2. Michelle Rodriguez
The 38-year-old actress is widely known for portraying Letty in the Fast & Furious franchise. She’s also known for Avatar, Girl fight, Blue Crush, and the Machete films in which she stars alongside Danny Trejo. Back in 2012, interviewers asked Michelle about her love for the movie The Paperboy:
“One of my friends said, ‘[Nicole Kidman’s] going to get nominated for an Oscar for [The Paperboy].’ I was like, ‘Nah, man. She’s not black!’ I laugh, but it’s also very sad. It makes me want to cry. But I really believe you have to be trashy and black to get nominated. You can’t just be trashy.”
3. Sir Anthony Hopkins
The legendary Sir Anthony Hopkins (79) is best known for playing cannibal, Hannibal Lecter, in The Silence of the Lambs and 2001s Hannibal. He’s one of the highest rated/acclaimed actors of our time, and its really no surprise either. Mr. Hopkins has won an Oscar, and has also been nominated for three more. When asked what the Academy Awards were like, he had this to say:
“I can’t stand all that. I find it nauseating to watch and I think it’s disgusting to behold. People groveling around and kissing the backsides of famous producers and all that. It makes me want to throw up, it really does. It’s sick-making. I’ve seen it so many times. I saw it fairly recently, last year. Some great producer-mogul and everyone kisses this guy’s backside. I think, ‘What are they doing? Don’t they have any self respect?’ I wanted to say, ‘F*ck off.'”
4. James Cromwell
The 77-year-old actor is best know for Babe, The Green Mile, L.A. Confidential, Space Cowboys, and his roles in FX’s American Horror Story. In 2012, James had this to say about the Academy Awards:
“[They’re] basically created by the industry to promote pictures. They weren’t really to acknowledge the performances. Then it became sort of this great popularity contest and now, it’s an incredible show and it’s seen all over the world. But the strain on us to put ourselves up against other people to think that it’s some sort of a contest — and it isn’t a contest — we’re all in this together.”
Cool fact: James Cromwell is 6’7″ tall!
5. Bill Murray
Known for a wide-variety of movies like Groundhog Day, Ghostbusters, Caddyshack, and What About Bob?, you’d think that the 66-year-old would’ve been nominated more times than he has…but nope.
During the 2005 Oscars, Bill Murray (being nominated for ‘Best Actor’ in Lost in Translation) was upset when he lost to Sean Penn. He was mad at Penn, then mad at himself for even attending the show:
“P*ssed off? You bet I was. I don’t approve of award ceremonies, so I was wondering what had persuaded me to attend that one. I was p*ssed at myself.”
6. Daniel Radcliffe
Daniel Radcliffe (27) is best known for playing Harry Potter in the Harry Potter franchise, among others like Swiss Army Man, Imperium, and Horns. During the 84th Oscars, the star was upset after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 wasn’t nominated for anything but technical awards:
“I don’t think the Oscars like commercial films, or kids’ films, unless they’re directed by Martin Scorsese. I was watching Hugo the other day and going, ‘Why is this nominated and we’re not?’ I was slightly miffed. There’s a certain amount of snobbery. It’s kind of disheartening. I never thought I’d care. But it would’ve been nice to have some recognition, just for the hours put in.”
7. Ethan Hawke
The 46-year-old is best known for movies like Training Day, The Magnificent Seven, Born to Be Blue, and The Purge. Ethan Hawke has been nominated for his roles in Training Day, Before Sunset, Before Midnight, and Boyhood. After losing each of his nominations, his hate for the Oscars continues on.
“It’s so asinine…if you look at how many forgettable, stupid movies have won Oscars and how many mediocre performers have Oscars above their fireplace. Making a priority of chasing these fake carrots and money and dubious accolades, I think it’s really destructive.”
So what do you think? What are your thoughts on the Oscars? Do you agree with what these actors have said?
For all things movies, comics, and superheroes…keep it here!
