As the year goes on and the dates for Warner Bros. next two DC films (Wonder Woman and Justice League) comes ever so close, more exciting news from/about the DCEU (DC Extended Universe) continues to unfold. For the past few weeks, we’ve gotten rumors surrounding some of the most anticipated superhero films to come – everything from the reassurance of Dwayne Johnson’s role as Black Adam in the Shazam film to news on Ben Affleck’s solo Batman movie. But, that’s not all! The newest and maybe most exciting news, as of yet, comes right before a supposed Justice League trailer drop. What we have now is something really interesting.
The Wrap recently released some information in regards to the highly anticipated Green Lantern Corps film, and it’s a shortlist of the actors currently being pursued for the role of Hal Jordan. The studio says they haven’t been in talks with the rumored actors yet, but, among the six actors mentioned, you won’t believe who one of them is.
It’s none other than the former Green Lantern himself,
Just last year, the 40-year old actor starred as the infamous Merc with a Mouth in the highly successful Marvel film, Deadpool, in which they made a joke about Reynolds’ previous superhero movie, Green Lantern.
“Don’t make the super suit green…or animated!”
No information on why Mr. Reynolds has been rumored for the role, has yet surfaced, but a handful of fans are beginning to wonder if this is now a stab back at Reynolds for making that joke in Deadpool. Of course though, with the setback Deadpool 2 seems to be having, it might not be a bad thing to bring Reynolds back into the fold. You see, then the studio could thus save on the whole backstory shenanigans reboots seem to always have.
As we continue on and look at the other actors being rumored, be sure to remember that the Green Lantern Corps film is being called “Lethal Weapon in space” and will focus on Hal Jordan and John Stewart…
The 54-year old actor is best known for his roles in great films such as Top Gun, Jerry Maguire, Risky Buisness, Minority Report, and Edge of Tomorrow. You might also remember that Tom was also rumored to play Tony Stark before Robert Downey Jr. ultimately took the role as Iron Man. It doesn’t come as a major surprise that Tom Cruise would be considered for the role, being that he has been in some military-type roles before and because he’s a popular actor.
Among some of Mr. Gyllenhaal’s best films are 2015’s Southpaw, Nightcrawler, Prisoners, Donnie Darko, and 2016’s Nocturnal Animals in which he starred alongside Amy Adams. Jake Gyllenhaal has been a longtime fan favorite for the role of Hal Jordan, and he’s even defended superhero movies:
“Superhero movies have inspired me. I remember when I saw Thor I was really inspired. There’s a reason for myth. They are so moving and so important… Sometimes I’m in a scene playing what people might interpret as a sociopath and I’m thinking of Thor.”
The 42-year old actor has been in a substantial amount of films over the past few years, including Limitless, Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, American Sniper, and The Hangover trilogy. Along with Ryan Reynolds, Bradly Cooper and Jared Leto auditioned for the first Green Lantern film back in 2011, before it went to Reynolds. Being that Mr. Cooper voices Rocket Raccoon in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and it’s sequel, it’ll probably be a “no go” on his involvement in the film.
The 46-year old is best known for his roles in television shows and movies such as Community, The Soup, Deliver Us from Evil, and The Informant!. If Joel was to be the next Hal Jordan, at least we know he’d be funny!
Now, Armie Hammer has appeared in a great many films, including The Lone Ranger, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Mirror Mirror, The Social Network, and Nocturnal Animals. The 30-year old has been a major tease on social media the last couple of weeks, teasing a possible role in the DCEU as well as sharing a picture with him and Joe Manganiello together – who will play Deathstroke in Ben Affleck’s Batman film. Going to the great lengths that he is, I wouldn’t be surprised if Armie has already been cast or he’s just simply teasing us fans.
Warner Bros. has also set David Goyer and Justin Rhodes to write the script for the Green Lantern Corps film, which has a release date of July 24, 2020.
So what do you think? Are any of these actors ones you’d like to see portray Hal Jordan? Let me know in the comments section below!
